Gerund ialah kata kerja bentuk –ING yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda.
- Gerund digunakan sebagai Subject (pokok kalimat)
e.g. Swimming is a good sport.
Cooking is not difficult.
Collecting stamps is an interesting hobby.
Smoking is not good for health.
Teaching is a good proffession.
- Gerund digunakan sebagai object (pelengkap)
e.g. My hobby is playing badminton.
His favourite sport is climbing mountain.
John loves travelling.
My sister’s hobby is collecting coins.
Mary is interested in reading novel.
- Gerund digunakan setelah semua kata depan (prepositions) seperti in, on, of, for, through, after, before, without, by, dsb.
e.g. After having dinner last night, we went to the movie.
Before going to bed, we must pray to God.
Without mastering grammar, imposible for us to speak English well.
- Gerund digunakan setelah kata-kata kerja tertentu seperti :
To avoid = menghindari
To consider = mempertimbangkan
To enjoy = senang
To stop = berhenti
To finish = selesai
To admit = mengakui
To deny = menyangkal
To mind = keberatan (negative & question)
To practise = mempraktekkan
To suggest = menyarankan
To object to = keberatan (positive)
To take to = menyukai
e.g. Why do you always avoid meeting her ?
We consider going to visit Borobudur next holiday.
I enjoy studying English with Mr. Winata.
John and Doni have stopped talking to each other for long.
I will finish reading this book tomorrow.
He admits making the mistake.
The servant denied stealing the jewels.
She doesn’t mind going with you tonight.
Do you mind waiting here a moment ?
She objects to going with him to the party.
Note : semua kata kerja ini tidak dapat diikuti oleh Infinitive.
- Gerund digunakan setelah ungkapan-ungkapan tertentu seperti :
It is no use = tiada gunanya
Worth = patut
Busy = sibuk
Fancy = tak disangka
Can’t help = tak dapat menahan
Let’s go = mari kita
e.g. It is no use regretting something has happened.
This book is worth studying.
My sister is busy cleaning the room.
Fancy meeting you here.
She can’t help crying when heard the bad news.
Let’s go shopping.
- Gerund digunakan dengan kata ganti empunya (Possesive)
e.g. Your coming to her house made her very happy.
Do you mind my smoking here ?
The teacher doesn’t like our coming late.
His leaving abroad has made her very sad.
I can’t imagine their refusing to pay their debt.
- Gerund digunakan sebagai kata benda majemuk (compound noun)
Dining-table = meja makan
Shopping-bag = tas belanja
Waiting-room = ruang tunggu
Racing-car = mobil balap
Swimming-pool = kolam renang
Washing-machine = mesin cuci
Writing-paper = kertas tulis
Reading-book = buku bacaan
Writing-desk = meja tulis
Swimming-costume = pakaian renang
Adapun beberapa katakerja yang dapat diikuti oleh Gerund maupun Infinitive antara lain :
To advise = menasihatkan
To agree = setuju
To begin = mulai
To continue = terus
To hate = benci
To intend = berniat, bermaksud
To like = suka, senang
To regret = menyesal
To start = mulai
To try = mencoba
e.g. I like dancing.
I like to dance.
He agreed going with us.
He agreed to go with us.
She hates studying with him.
She hates to study with him.
They intend going to Bali next holiday.
They intend to go to Bali next holiday.
I regret telling him about it.
I regret to tell him about it.
We will begin taking an English course next month.
We will begin to take an English course next month.
Passive Verbal with Gerund (kata kerja pasif)
- As Subject (pokok kalimat)
Structure : Being + Past Participle (V3)
e.g. Being asked to do his homework annoys Iwan. (Karena disuruh mengerjakan pekerjaan rumahnya menjengkelkan Iwan).
Being taken to the zoo, the children feel very glad.
Being moved to the new office, she feels very nervous.
Being taught by another teacher, she doesn’t want to study again.
Being beaten by her husband very often, she decides to stay away.
- As Object (pelengkap)
e.g. I don’t like being woken up early in the morning (saya tidak senang dibangunkan pagi-pagi).
Jihn hates being told that he is lazy.
The children dislike being asked to study English.
The students don’t enjoy being given homework during the weekend.
My brother can’t stand being asked to tidy his room.
Kalimat-kalimat di atas (pola 1 dan 2) dapat dinyatakan dengan menggunakan Infinitive. Perhatikan contoh-contoh berikut ini :
Structure : to be + Past Participle (V3)
e.g. To be taken to the zoo, the children feel very glad.
To be asked to do his homework annoys Iwan.
My sister doesn’t like to be woken up early.
The students don’t want to be taught by another teacher.
He refused to be appointed as chairman.
- As adjective (kata sifat)
e.g. The patient being examined by the doctor is my uncle (pasien yang sedang diperiksa oleh dokter adalah paman saya).
The man being arrested by the police is a thief.
The film being shown at Jakarta Theatre is the best one.
The watch being repaired is my father’s.
The building being built near our house is a hotel.
Passive Verbal with Gerund (kata kerja pasif)
Keterangan waktu seperti when, while, since dapat diikuti oleh ING Form bila subyek dari Anak Kalimat sama dengan Induk Kalimat untuk menghindari pengulangan.
e.g. When we ride a motor-cycle, we must wear a helmet.
ü When riding a motor-cycle, we must wear a helmet.
While I was walking to school this morning, I saw an accident.
ü While walking to school this morning, I saw an accident.
While I was waiting for the bus to come, I read her letter.
ü While waiting for the bs to come, I read her letter.
Since he left school, my brother has been unemployed.
ü Since leaving school, my brother has been unemployed.
Since he returned from abroad, his English has been more better.
ü Since returning from abroad, his English has been more better.
