Grammar Bahasa Inggris-Question Tags


Question Tags sangat umum penggunaannya dalam percakapan Bahasa Inggris sehari-hari. Pola kalimat dengan Question Tags digunakan untuk meminta penegasan dari pendengar tentang sesuatu yang belum begitu meyakinkan pembicara atau minta persetujuan dari pendengar. Misalnya dalam Bahasa Indonesia kita mengatakan :

Johan adalah seorang mahasiswa bukan ?

(Johan is a student, isn’t he ?)

Kata bukan dalam kalimat ini yang kita kenal dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai Question Tags. Question Tags dibentuk dengan menggunakan auxiliary (is, are, do, does, did, have, has, can, may, must, shall will, etc) yang dirangkaikan dengan pronoun (I, you, she, he, it, we, they) dengan rumusan sebagai berikut :

-          Bila pernyataan positif, Question Tag negatif.

-          Bila pernyataan negatif, Question Tag positif.

  1. Kalimat-kalimat dengan to be (am, is, are, was, were).

e.g. I am as fat as he, aren’t I ?

I am not as fat as he, am I ?

You are government officer, aren’t you ?

You are not government officer, are you ?

He is a doctor, isn’t he ?

He is not a doctor, is he ?

It’s Johan’s dictionary, isn’t it ?

It is not Johan’s dictionary, is it ?

She wa late this morning, wasn’t she ?

She was not late this morning, was she ?

  1. Kalimat-kalimat dengan kata kerja (verb), Question Tagnya dibentuk dengan menggunakan do, does, did, sesuai dengan tenses dari kalimat itu sendiri.

e.g. Last night you spent the night at the hotel, didn’t you ?

Last night you didn’t spend the night at the hotel, did you ?

Johan and Mary went to the party together, didn’t they?

Johan and Mary didn’t go to the party together, did they ?

I look pale, don’t I ?

I don’t look pale, do I ?

She goes to school by bus, doesn’t she ?

She doesn’t go to school by bus, does she ?

The students like English, don’t they ?

The students don’t like English, do they ?

  1. Kalimat-kalimat dengan auxiliaries (can, may, must, will, should, would, have, has, had, etc.). Question Tagnya dibentuk dengan mengulangi kembali auxiliary tersebut.

e.g. Your father can speak English fluently, can’t he ?

Your father can’t speak English fluently, can he ?

We may go home now, mayn’t we ?

We may not go home now, may we ?

They will invite us, won’t they ?

They will not invite us, will they ?

He must study English, musn’t he ?

He need not study English, need he ?

Children should obey their parent, shouldn’t they ?

Children shouldn’t obey their parent, should they ?

We ought to study harder, oughtn’t we ?

We ought not to study harder, ought we ?

Father has left, hasn’t he ?

Father has not left, has he ?

They have been there may times, haven’t they ?

They have not been there may times, have they ?

He would rather stay home, wouldn’t he ?

He would rather not stay home, would he ?

John might be there, mightn’t he ?

John might not be there, might he ?

She had better go there, hadn’t she ?

She had better not go there, had she ?

  1. Untuk idiomatic expression used to, Question Tag-nya dibentuk dengan did dan auxiliary have to/has to dibentuk dengan do, does.

e.g. He used to live here, didn’t he ?

He didn’t use to live here, did he ?

We have to practise our English, don’t we ?

We don’t have to practise our English, do we ?

He has to study grammar, doesn’t he ?

He doesn’t have to study grammar, does he ?

  1. Untuk kalimat imperative, Question Tag-nya dibentuk dengan menggunakan will you dan shall we. Perhatikan contoh-contoh berikut ini :

Stop the noise, will you ?

Come and see me tomorrow, will you ?

Let me have a look, will you ?

Let me read it for you, will you ?

Let’s go for a walk, shall we ?

Let’s go shopping, shall we ?

  1. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I in finding this matter to be actually something which I think I might never understand. It sort of feels too complex and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward on your next publish, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
